APPRAISAL TIPS
Wine Market Journal prices reflect the auction gross price (final price paid
by buyer) for a given wine in an open market forum. All commissions and premiums charged by the auction house
(except shipping) are included in the prices
we report. Anyone appraising a collection will want to take this into account when using our data. Auction companies generally charge
a buyers' premium between 10% and 18% . They also collect a 10 to 15% commission from
the consignor and often charge the seller an additional 1-2% insurance. Thus, a wine with a $100/btl WMJ auction average would
yield a auction net price (final net price to the seller) between $65 and $80, depending on the fee structures of the auction company.
SEARCH TIPS
Whenever a direct match is not found the web site provides you with a list
of alternatives underneath the error message. For example, type in
'Harlan' with the vintage as 1997 and you will get a list of close matches
that are all live search links. Click on 'Harlan Estate' and you will have
your results and be ready for the next search. If the wine/vintage you
want is not in the database (i.e. Harlan 2000), the web site will generate
a list of vintages that are covered in the database. You may then use the
back button on your browser to return to the search page to change the
vintage or try a new search.
If you wish to review all vintages for a given wine, please try one of the
'Country/Region' searches at the bottom of the search page (clicking on the
'Try a Different Search' link also takes you back to the opening page).
Try the following to find the US Auction average for Chateau Lafite:
1. click on **US Auction Averages**
2. click on France - Bordeaux
3. click on Pauillac
4. click on Lafite Rothschild
5. choose 3 time periods and click submit at the bottom of the page
(if you do not check any boxes it defaults to the current month
and two previous years)
You should now have a complete printout of our data for Lafite. If you
then want to search for Petrus just hit the back button on your browser 3
times and click on Pomerol, then Petrus. Getting to the results with this
search method may take longer, but if you are needing to look up multiple
vintages it can be faster.
